If you are reading this, you may have been recommended to undergo an EMG – shorthand for electromyography and includes a nerve conduction study (NCS). It is important to know what to expect and how to prepare for this study so that your experience can be as smooth as possible.
What to expect:
- Your physician will explain the test to you, including the risks and benefits, answer any questions, and obtain your consent before proceeding.
- You will be asked to sit or lie down on the examination table. You may be asked to move into different positions during the procedure.
- To begin, the NCS is done. This involves the placement of several electrodes onto the surface of your skin and the electrical stimulation of each nerve needing to be tested. A single nerve may be tested along multiple points. Several nerves need to be tested to reach a conclusive diagnosis.
- Next, the EMG is done. A small needle is sequentially inserted into each muscle needing to be tested. This test does not involve any type of electrical stimulation. While the needle is inserted, you will be prompted to relax your muscle, then slightly contract your muscle, and at last fully contract your muscle. Several muscles need to be tested to reach a conclusive diagnosis.
- The entire procedure should take between 30 and 60 minutes.
- All the information collected will be analyzed and explained to you by your physician.
- You may feel sore in the area that was tested for a few days. In rare cases, you may experience tingling, bruising, and/or swelling at the needle insertion site(s). If these symptoms progress, it is important to notify your physician.
How to prepare:
- Please come showered/bathed.
- Do not apply any lotions or creams after washing/before the test.
- Wear comfortable and/or loose clothing.
- Please eat and drink as usual. There is no need to fast prior.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled procedure time.
